Nominal Group Technique

September 1, 2008

For Risk Identification, several techniques were used with assistance from the stakeholders.

Nominal Group technique is an information-gathering technique similar to the Delphi technique that can be used during the Risk Identification process.

This technique requires the participants to be together in the same room. Each participant has paper (post stick notes!) and pencil in front of them, and they are asked to write down what risks they think the project faces. Each piece of paper should contain only one risk. The papers are given to the facilitator, who sticks them up to the wall or a white board. The panel is then asked to review all the risks posted on the board; rank them and prioritise them, in writing; and submit the ranking to the facilitator. Now, a complete list of prioritised risks is ready.

Delphi Technique

May 15, 2008

One of the Risk Identification technique, used to gather information.

In Delphi Techique, the participants dont usually know each other, nor they have to be present at the same location.

A Moderator or project Manager will usually communicate with the participants to identify the Risk and consolidate all the risks identified by them.

This is one of the best technique of Risk identification, as the participants (not necessarily be only from project team) would not be influenced by other participants, as they usually do not know each other.

Cause-and-effect Diagram

May 2, 2008

This is one of the diagramming techniques used to identify the risks. This is part of tools and techniques of Risk Identification process.

This diagram will show the relationship of the problem effects and their causes. This diagram is also called a fishbone diagram.

Brainstorming

April 30, 2008

This is one of the tools and techniques of Risk Identification process.

The basic idea is, gather all relevant parties related to the project that includes PM, project team members, key stake holders, risk team and subject experts and requesting to identify all the potential risks expected during the course of the project.

The PM to perform the role of moderator to identify the correct risk categories and drive the discussion in the right direction to list the all risks.
