Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

Abraham Maslow hypothesized that human beings have five basic needs arranged in hierarchical order. Usually the lower level needs must be met before the person can move to the next level of needs in the hierarchy.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs stats that once a lower level needs are met, it will not serve as motivator for a person and the next level needs become the driving factor for his/her motivation. Maslow emphasises that human beings are always in need for one or another state needs. The five basic needs are

1. Self-actualization – Performing at peak potential
2. Self-esteem needs  – Accomplishment, respect for self, capability
3. Social needs       – A sense of belonging, love, acceptance, friendship
4. Safety and security needs – physical welfare and security
5. Basic physical needs      – Food, clothing, shelter
